So, you've completed your amazing workout, worked your legs, smashed your shoulders and maybe even threw in some cardio. Perhaps you just got done with a brutal football practice or finished off a 5 mile run. (Disgusted look) People ask me all of the time: Whats the best post-workout recovery drink Jason?
Well, you asked, so Im gonna to tell you. Lets start with getting a better understanding about just what it is that youve used for energy during the course of your workout. When youre doing those heavy squats or running those sprints, your muscles are burning sugar as their primary energy source. As you progress through the workout, your sugar supplies dwindle and you become fatigued. Now that the workout is over, what do you think your body wants you to consume so it can refill those depleted energy banks? Yup, thats right, sugar. Think about this: what is the main ingredient in most sports drinks? Right again, sugar! Most people make the mistake of thinking that after a hard workout they need to eat or drink a bunch of protein to rebuild their muscles, but the reality is, the very first thing your body wants is to refill the gas-tank. Optimally consuming a simple sugar along with a little bit of whey protein in about a 4-1 ratio, will help get your body jump-started back onto the anabolic highway. My favorite post-workout beverage? Chocolate milk!
